What personal trainers in India need to know about registration, certification and insurance before taking on clients.

Before you take on paying clients in India, it's worth knowing what's required and what clients and gyms expect. This guide covers the basics. Always confirm details with the official body, as rules change.
Registration
- India has no statutory licence or national register for personal trainers.
- The Sports, Physical Education, Fitness and Leisure Skills Council (SPEFL-SC) sets national skill standards for fitness trainer roles under the Skill India framework.
- International certifications such as ACE, ACSM and NASM, and Indian academies such as K11, are widely recognised by gyms.
Insurance
- Liability insurance for independent trainers is less common in India but available. Ask an insurer about professional indemnity cover, especially if you train clients at home.
